Today's Observations: Community College

Shortly after my graduation from Emory, I declared a private war on private universities. My basis for attack was two-fold: 1) I felt I could have received just as good an education at a public or community college, and 2) you are paying too much money simply for a university name on a transcript and resume. It only took two and a half months to change my mind. That is what I have learned attending Georgia Perimeter College, a community college.

To address my first point about quality of education, I think my criticism at Emory was completely defensive. I screwed up and was not the best student. I, like anyone anywhere, did have some horrible professors, but ultimately any lack of learnin' I got was my own damn fault. Even when I did poorly in a class, I have still retained information. That's a class of education that superseded my laziness as a student.

It was my procrastination and the like that resulted in a rejection letter from the GSU M.Spec.Ed program, not the faculty of Emory College. To make up for my lackluster GPA, I am taking courses at Georgia Perimeter College, a community college spread across the greater metro area. I went in with prejudice I must admit and have found them to be founded. I am no longer PRE-judging, I am actively judging.

All elements of this school, from teaching staff to student body reek of mistakes. I laughed to myself going in, wondering if it would be like NBC's Community with a cast of characters all trying to recover and rebuild. Full of people who realize that something in their life is lacking. Not at all. In its place is an unbelievable level of exceptionalism. It seems the motto is "You are always right if look good and have some swagger." Go in hoping for Community only to realize it is full of 18-20 year old Pierce Hawthornes.

Finally I absolutely, though briefly, must evaluate my second point: my total for GPC, if adjusted as a full four years, would be approximately 1/5 of that from Emory. I can safely say, taking my massive student loans into account, Emory was worth every penny.

(There are decent people at GPC, both staff and student, but on the whole...yeah.)

(Pictures of this wretched place to follow in the next post)
